How to Start a Small 3D Print Shop

· Duck Heroes

A grounded sequence for opening a small shop that sells 3D-printed collectibles, starting from files you are allowed to sell.

A small print shop is a habit plus a license, not a pile of printers. If you want to sell collectible ducks, set the shop up in an order that keeps you out of trouble.

1. Pick files you can sell

This is the step people reverse. They photograph first and read the license never. Start with files that grant commercial rights, and keep that grant where you can find it.

Duck Heroes will be a library of character and theme ducks, with commercial rules already written. The catalog is not open yet. Until a file is actually available under that license, use only designs you already have permission to sell, or designs you modeled yourself.

2. Print a small set you can repeat

Choose a handful of models you can print cleanly on the machine you own. One reliable duck is more useful than twelve failed experiments. Note orientation, layer height, and material in a slicer profile you can reopen.

General print setup is in how to print small ducks. Do not promise a customer a finish you have not held.

3. Price from your own numbers

Weigh the print, time the cleanup, price the mailer. The method is in how to price a collectible. A shop that copies someone else’s price is guessing about someone else’s costs.

4. Photograph the ducks you printed

Use your prints, on your table, in your light. Buyers are purchasing the object in the photo. Photography basics cover a simple setup.

5. Write listings that tell the truth

Size, material, layer lines, and “digital file not included.” Theme language should not pretend the print is official merchandise. Listing basics walk through the words.

6. Pack like you want a second order

A small figure with a broken bill does not come back as a happy review. Packing and shipping is part of the product.

7. Keep the paperwork boring

Save license versions, material notes, and what you charged. If you later join a library membership, the cancellation rules matter: selling rights follow the paid period, plus any sell-through for stock already printed. Read refunds before you assume a subscription is casual.

You do not need a second printer, a logo treatment, or a fake waitlist count to open. You need one honest listing of a duck you are allowed to sell.
