An STL file is not a blank object. Someone modeled it, and that person keeps the copyright. A license is the note that says what you are allowed to do with the file.
Most free files are personal use. You can print one for yourself or as a gift. You cannot list it for sale. A commercial license is the separate permission to print the file and sell the physical object.
Why the difference matters
Copyright covers 3D models the same way it covers a photo or a song. Selling a print without permission is using someone else's design to make money. Marketplaces take takedown notices seriously. A removed listing takes the photos, the reviews, and the rank with it.
This is not a special rule for ducks. It is the normal rule for any designed file, including a collectible rubber duck.
Three shapes a license can take
Per file. You buy the right to sell prints of one model. Clear, and easy to outgrow if you want a wide shelf.
A license that covers a library. One active license covers the files in that designer's catalog, for as long as the license stays active. This is the shape of the Duck Heroes commercial license.
A royalty. You pay a share of each sale. Less common for small collectibles, and harder to track at a craft fair.
What to read before you rely on it
Check five things in the actual text, not in a product photo.
- Which shops and fairs are allowed
- Whether you can ship anywhere
- Whether the number of physical units is capped
- Whether a helper or a print farm may touch the file
- Whether the right ends when a subscription ends
A membership-style license is only a selling right while it is active. When it ends, selling ends, apart from any sell-through the text gives you for stock you already printed.
What Duck Heroes allows
The Duck Heroes commercial license, when one is issued, lets you sell physical prints on online shops, markets, and fairs. It does not let you upload, resell, or give away the STL or 3MF. Paint, scale, and small hardware such as a magnet are fine. The digital remix is not yours to publish.
Third-party character names stay with their owners. A duck interpretation is not official merchandise of a film or a game.
The public catalog is not open yet, so there is no file to download from this site today. The rules are already published so you can read them before a file exists. Start with how selling works if you are planning a shop.
