Filament Colors for Character Ducks

· Duck Heroes

How to pick filament colors so a themed duck stays readable, including the classic yellow, black, and orange set.

Color is how a theme survives at the size of a desk duck. Too many colors and the face turns to noise. Too few and a vampire and a referee become the same blob.

Start with the duck, then the costume

A classic rubber duck is a yellow body, an orange bill, and dark eyes. Duck Heroes leans on that read: the capsule eyes stay dark and vertical so the character work can happen around them.

If you only have one color, print the body in a color that matches the theme’s largest area, and paint the bill and eyes. Paint is slower and often clearer than a bad color split.

A small palette beats a rainbow

For most characters you need:

  • A body color that fills the largest region
  • A bill color, often orange or a theme color that still reads as a bill
  • A dark color for the eyes
  • One accent for a hat, mask, or trim

A fifth color is for a logo-like mark or a small prop. If you need eight, the duck is probably too busy for its size.

Light, dark, and shine

Pastel bodies show layer lines more than a slightly deeper yellow. Pure white shows every speck. Silk shines and can blow out the eye sockets in a photo. Matte black hides detail in the eyes if the eye is also black. Give the eye a rim, a catchlight of a lighter filament, or enough contrast that the capsule shape is still visible.

Multicolor waste

Every extra color on a single-nozzle machine costs purge. A yellow duck with an orange bill and black eyes may be worth it. A tiny badge in a sixth color may not. See multicolor printing.

If you sell them

Name the colors in ordinary words and say whether the duck is painted. “Yellow, orange bill, black eyes” is a better description than a filament brand the buyer cannot repurchase. Photograph in the light your buyers will have, not only under a lamp that flatters silk. Photos cover that setup.

The catalog is not open yet, so there is no official color callout per theme on this site. When files arrive, follow the designer’s suggested split if one is included, then adjust only if your machine cannot hold that many changes cleanly.
